The multimeter is a versatile test instrument that can measure, as a minimum, voltage (A.C. and D.C.), current and resistance and may also be able to measure transistor gain, capacitance and temperature depending on the type of multimeter being used.
The correct order of operation is (a) build your circuit (b) connect the multimeter leads to the correct terminals on the multimeter, (c) select the correct range on the multimeter and (d) add the multimeter to the working circuit.
